Exercise Form: Technique Fixes for the Big Lifts

Exercise form guides for the lifts that matter: setup, step-by-step technique and the specific form mistakes that cap your squat, bench, deadlift, press and rows.

Good exercise form means a stable setup, a repeatable bar path, and a full range of motion on every rep, so the right muscles do the work and the weight can keep going up. When a lift stalls, the cause is often form that changes as the load rises. Film your sets from the side and compare your last rep with your first.

What does good form have in common across lifts?

Three things: brace and set up the same way every rep, keep the bar or handle on a consistent path, and use the full range you can control. Full-range training produced greater strength gains than partial-range training across 16 studies, with an effect size of 0.56 (Pallarés et al., 2021). In one MRI study, full squats grew the glutes and adductors about two to three times more than half squats (Kubo et al., 2019).

Muscle-activity (EMG) studies can offer useful clues, but they do not prove which exercise builds more muscle. Hip thrusts show far more glute EMG than squats, yet a nine-week trial found similar glute growth (Plotkin et al., 2023).

Which form guide do you need?

Start with the lift that has stalled or feels wrong. Each guide covers the setup, the steps, mistakes that shift work away from the target muscle, and how to tell form problems from programming problems.

Is it form or something else?

It is probably form if the bar path, depth, or torso angle changes as the weight climbs, or you feel the lift mostly in the wrong muscles. If every rep looks the same on video and the lift still will not move, look at programming, food, and recovery. The guide on how to get stronger after year one can help you review your plan. The mind-muscle connection can be useful on isolation work, but it is not a substitute for a solid setup.

If your form checks out and the lift is still stuck, the cause is somewhere else. Find out what's actually capping your lifts with a diagnosis that ranks training, eating and recovery.

FAQ

How do I know if my exercise form is correct?

Film from the side. Your setup, bar path, and depth should look the same on the last rep as on the first, and you should feel the set mostly in the target muscle.

How do you lift properly as a beginner?

Learn one setup per lift, use a weight you can control through full range, and add load in small steps only while reps still look the same. The guides above give you cues for each lift.

Should I lower the weight to fix my form?

Yes, if your range shrinks or your position changes under load. Drop to a weight where every rep matches, then rebuild with small jumps.
